Roy G. Biv

A playful Photoshop from an adapted photo.
The funny part is that the "O" segment only required some slight saturating.
Never thought of myself as an "orangehead!"

The Statue of Tarzan - Dadaist's, Unite!

Michelangelo being  perhaps one of THE most brilliant artists, and having a personal love of the organic form, it was only fitting that I take the demonstration of humanity in perfection and adapt it for my foray into Dada's realm.

That anti-art may constitute art itself is an inescapable irony, one that fits a quirky sense of humor.  I consider it a valuable lesson in taking one's work too seriously.  Someone will always be there with a banana and loincloth to bring you back down to Earth.

James Ensor - Unmasked

My parody of James Ensors "Mask" theme.  He became one of my favorite artists during study, likely due to his gall.  It takes balls, pardon the language, to paint YOURSELF as Jesus Christ entering Brussels.  While  the work is on display in New York's Museum of Modern Art, it got him into a heap of trouble in his day.

The mask was a gift to me from my generous (and much adored) parents, from a trip to Vegas.  Using myself as a model was the natural choice, due to Ensors somewhat self-indulgent choices.
I believe it compliments Ensors carnival style very nicely.

Above is the Photoshop version, and below is through an oil paint filter.

Life Drawing - The Organic Form

These are just a few of my several books worth of life drawing efforts.  I honestly think its a shame we're so afraid of the human form in our culture (speaking of the USA).  I find it fascinating and beautiful, and I've spent my entire drawing career (IE: Life) focusing on people, on animals, on organic, moving forms.  I'm very appreciative of the brave people who subject themselves to the whims of artists like myself.

I believe the top form was a 10 minute pose, while those below range from 1 to 3 minutes.

Attempting Contemporary Art

Inspired by Thomas Coopers beautiful photography.

This was my original shot, taken off a ferry between Skagway and Juneau, Alaska.
It may not be my forte, but I love photographing *everything.*

A piece particularly close to my heart.  I call it "Nuggets at Play."  Anyone in the USMC airwing will get the reference, "nuggets" are new to the airwing, sort of like "boots" are new Marines.  This was actually a broomstick, and the flag is Photoshopped in from the Marine Corps Memorial.

A playful Photoshop piece, a bit of parody on the religious concept "eat of my flesh."  I always thought it was a bit morbid, so this piece seeks to make it a little easier to swallow.  Please note the "57," being the Heinz number, which was actually a marvelous coincidence, but I claim unintended genius on that reference.

My attempt at a Mary Heilmann.  I don't particularly care for her work, but the impact of her combination of color and geometric shape can't be denied.  Generally though, I think her approach to her work is careless, not quite as special a thing as the art community apparently thinks.  Of course, I'll stress that's only my opinion as a novice painter.

Value Drawings with the Wacom

An alien creature, a couple versions of the same.  I officially dub him... Mantaroo!  And Mantaroo Jr.

Yet another value drawing, put a LOT of work into this one.  The snakes pose was borrowed from another source, but the rest of the work is mine.  Especially the ninja part.  Eeeeevil ninja snake alien!  I mean, check out that flowing red scarf.  Only an eeeeevil ninja snake would wear such a fabulous scarf.

I absolutely, without a doubt in my mind, will never, ever, NEVER go into object design.  My heart bleeds the days I must force myself to stylize a car, a motorcycle, a jet, a blimp, a building, a whatever mechanized thing you can think of.  I find it incredibly monotonous, and couldn't imagine getting out of bed each morning knowing this is what I was going to do.  It would be like waking up and realizing I was an accountant.
(No offense intended to the accountants out there, but it murders my soul slowly.)

Character Turn Arounds - Multiple Pictures, FTW!

Aha!  One might assume you don't need a new entry for every picture.  ^_^

Punk Girl, in color!  Very simple work, again, but I still like how she came out.  My Photoshop skills are coming along nicely with the extra practice.

A different character turn around, cleaned up a bit more than my first attempt with Punk Girl.  I'd like to stress this is NOT my own original character, the initial pose was swiped, no idea who the character is.  No intent but to practice my turn arounds and color skills, but just making clear its not my initial design.

The same character (wish I could identify her) with an action turn around, mid-dance pose.

Character Turn Around - Relaxed Punk Girl

A less static turn around of Punk Girl.  Still not very quality, but the Wacom became easier as I adjusted to the stylus.

Character Turn Around - Body & Height Chart

Some additional work on that first character.  Forgive the vastly oversimplified body, it was more explorative than detail oriented work.  The six-headed measurement is somewhat standard for animation figures, though of course it varies per genre and intent for the character itself.  I was thinking "punk girl," pretty straight forward.

Character Turn Around - Head & Dimensions

A first attempt at photo posting!  Also a first attempt at a formal character creation, as well as my first project on the marvelous Wacom.  Wonderful machine, the Wacom screens.  As I said, a formal turn around of a character head.
